If nothing has been selected before you trigger the update then you’ll be given the option of updating references in the current provision (i.e. the current section, article, regulation etc.) or the whole document. Otherwise, Lawmaker will update all references in your selection.

...

Both valid and invalid references will be updated. If Lawmaker can no longer find the target of valid reference in the current document then it will change the reference’s status to invalid. Equally, if Lawmaker finds the target of an invalid reference then it will change the reference’s status to valid.

Showing j-refs as part of cross-references

You can make the Editor and any PDF generated show the j-ref of target provisions within cross-references. See Managing J-refs for more about this.

Notes

Valid

Orange text

The system target provision has been identified the text to be a cross reference and has created a mapping to the corresponding target provisionthe citation should update correctly when you update x-refs.

Invalid

Grey highlighted text

The system has identified the text to be a cross reference but has been unable to find the corresponding target provision cannot be found in the document.

Users can choose to ignore the invalid cross reference if they knew the target provision hadn’t been written yet.

Or, if the target provision did not exist in the current document (an external x-ref) and the system failed to identify it as such, the user can update the cross reference’s status to ‘ignore’ which means the system will no longer attempt to update the cross reference following an ‘update x-ref’ operation. (in future, pattern matching will be continually refined to minimise this occurrence(It may, however, exist in another document.)

Can’t resolve

Black text with orange highlight

The system has located Lawmaker can find the target provision but has identified that it has either been promoted or demoted and highlights it to the user.Users will have to redo the cross reference for it to become ‘valid’ again (in future the system will attempt to update the cross reference to reflect the promotion/demotion change)is unable to update the reference text automatically. This is usually because the target provision has changed in some way, e.g. it has be promoted or demoted.

To fix this, it is generally best to remove the existing reference and either re-tag the reference if it remains correct or insert a new reference using the Structure View.

Ignore

Purple text with dotted grey underline

The user has manually updated the cross-reference’s status to ‘ignore’ so that the system no longer attempts to update the x-ref following an ‘update x-ref’ reference text of this cross-reference will not be updated as part of an Update x-refs operation.
