Introduction

You can insert a unique reference against the main provisions in your document (Bills and SI/SSIs) which can be useful for tracking correspondence.

How to insert a J-ref

Place the cursor in the provision that you would like to insert a J-ref against and insert one by

  • selecting ‘Insert > Insert J-ref’ from the upper toolbar

  • selecting “Insert J-ref” from the right-click menu in the Editor

  • selecting ‘Insert J-ref’ from the right-click menu in the structure view

The system will present a modal allowing you to specify a unique reference

Add your unique reference and click ‘Save’

The J-ref will be displayed in the left-hand margin against your selected provision and in the structure view after the provision number but before the heading text.

How to delete a J-ref

Place your cursor in the J-ref that you want to delete

Expand the right-hand panel

Click on ‘Attributes’

Click on the value labelled “ukl:jref”

Click on the bin (delete) icon to remove the J-ref

How to delete all J-refs

Select ‘Insert > Delete all J-refs’ from the upper tool bar

They system will present a warning

Click on ‘Delete’ if you wish to delete them all

All J-refs in the document will be removed

How to update a J-ref

Place your cursor in the provision that you would like to update the J-ref for and 

  • select ‘Insert > Insert J-ref’ from the upper toolbar

  • select “Insert J-ref” from the right-click menu in the Editor

  • select ‘Insert J-ref’ from the right-click menu in the structure view

The system will present a modal, pre-populated with the J-ref

Change your reference and click ‘Save’

The J-ref will be updated

How to view/hide J-refs in cross references in the Editor

  • Open a document in the Editor

  • In the upper tool bar, select Tools > Show/hide J-refs in cross references

  • Lawmaker will display J-refs in any cross references where the target section/schedule/regulation (etc.) was assigned a J-ref

Note

if you add a J-ref after creating a cross reference to that provision, you will need to run 'update x-refs' for the J-ref to be visible in the cross reference

How to view J-refs in cross references in PDFs

  • In the “Generate PDF” dialogue box, select “Show J numbers in margin” under the ‘Extras’ section

  • Lawmaker will display J-refs in any cross references where the target section/schedule/regulation (etc.) was assigned a J-ref

Hints and tips

You can optionally view J-refs in cross references in the Editor and in PDFs.  See “Managing cross references” for more information

If you added a numerical value to a J-ref e.g. “D123”, when you choose to insert a J-ref in the next provision after it, the system will suggest the next reference in sequence e.g. “D124”

J-refs must be unique (within the document), alphanumerical and up to 10 characters long

J-refs can be inserted against sections (Bills), Regulations (or Articles etc.) (SI/SSIs) and against Schedules (Both)

If you use the structure view to insert a J-ref, you can insert it from any provision below a Section (for Bill) or Regulation (or Article etc.) for an SI/SSI but it will be inserted against the parent section/regulation/article etc.
