Purpose of the list

At Ping Pong stage, if any Lords amendments have been disagreed to by the Commons without any alternative proposal being offered, a committee is appointed to draw up a reason for each disagreement.

The Commons Reasons document is produced for the Reasons Committee. It contains government motions drafted by OPC.

Content

When first created, a Reasons Document is empty. Running the ‘Update list’ action in the Editor will populate the list with all Reasons Motions with status ‘Ready for Publishing’.

Ordering and Numbering

The Reasons Motions are sorted by reference to the Lords Amendment they are disagreeing with. They are not numbered.

Format

Each Reasons Motion appears under a left-aligned heading stating the Lords amendment number. A short rule appears below the amendment number.

The proposer’s name appears in bold, left-aligned.

The text of the Reason itself appears in italics.
