Before you complete this module, you will need your own training project containing a half finished bill to continue drafting. If you havenât got one already, create a project containing this half finished bill: The following steps will allow you to create the data required for this exercise.
Download the XML document for the exercise by clicking on the link youâve been provided with. By default, the downloaded file is usually placed in the âdownloadsâ folder on your computer.
Log in to Lawmaker.
From the Dashboard, create a new project of the type you need for the exercise. Give it a title such as [Your Initials] Drafting a bill. (See Creating a new project.)
From the Project tab for that project, select DocumentActions > Upload document, and select the XML file for the exercise which you have downloaded. It can be uploaded into the default folder that has been created in the project. (See Create a new document by uploading an XML file.)
On the newly uploaded document version, select Actions > Update Document Information and update the Title to match the title you originally gave the project.
Duplicate this document version using Actions > Duplicate version and call the new version the name of this module. We will create a new document version per module.
Open the duplicated version in the Editor
Exercise 1: Change tag view
This exercise will help you set up the Editor to hide tags which provides a cleaner view of the editor whilst drafting your document. You only need to do this once as Lawmaker will save this setting. By default, the very first time you log onto Lawmaker (or after you have cleared your cookies) partial tag view is enabled.
Find the document version you wish to duplicate
Select Actions > Duplicate Version for the selected document
Specify or select a folder name (for the purposes of this module, select Pre-Introduction) and unique version description (for this module, call it Getting Started with the Editor), leaving âStrip out page/line numbersâ ticked
Click on Create and a duplicate version of the document is created and visible on the Project tab
Open this document in the Editor. When the Editor has finished loading, set the Editor view to No Tags
In the Editor, click on the tag button to the left of the breadcrumb
Select No Tags
Exercise 2: Set your preferred numbering mode
Continue from exercise 1. This exercise will help you set up your preferred numbering mode in the Editor. Once you have set your preferred numbering mode, each time you open a document in the Editor, your preferred numbering mode will be remembered.
From the upper tool bar, select Tools > Turn on/off Auto-Renumbering
If green success message says that auto-renumbering is now OFF, you are in auto-assign mode which will assign a newly inserted or pasted provision a unique number without changing any other provisionâs number around it
If green success message says that auto-renumbering is now ON, you are in auto-renumber mode where any lower-level provisions impacted by the insertion or deletion of a provision will be automatically renumbered.
Exercise 3: Fold provisions in your document
Continue from exercise 2. This exercise will teach you how to toggle the view of sections (and also schedule paragraphs) in the Editor view to declutter the page if required
Fold the content of a section so that only its heading and number is visible
In the Editor, click on the triangle in the left margin next to a section. The section will fold down so that only the heading and number is visible.
Click on the triangle again. The section will unfold so that you can see the entire contents.
Exercise 4: Find and replace
Continue from exercise 3. This exercise will teach you how to use find and replace.
Â
Find all instances of the word meeting and replace with gatherings
Click on Find/Replace in the right-hand panel (the magnifying glass) or use CTRL+F to automatically open this panel.
Type meetings into field that says âSearch forâ and type gatherings in the field that says 'Replace with'
Select âMatch caseâ and click on Replace All
Repeat but this time capitalise the first letter in both words.
Exercise 5: Check the spelling in your document
Continue from exercise 4. This exercise will teach you how to use Lawmakerâs spell checker.
Â
Deliberately create a spelling mistake in the document and run spell checker.
In the Editor, run spell check by clicking on F7 on your keyboard (on some laptops you you might find you also need to press the Fn key at the same time as F7)
The Spelling dialog box opens and reports any misspelled words with suggestions on what to replace it with.
Click on Replace button to change the misspelled word
Click on Ignore all button for Coronavirus which isnât a recognised word.
Click on the X button to close the dialog box
