Promote and Demote Rules - DRAFT
Lawmaker can promote elements until it reaches the highest level element and demote elements until it reaches the lowest level element, dependent on the type of element above it.
Promoting or demoting Paragraphs with Specific Numbering Formats, will move the element one level up or down, as follows.
As long as there is a same style of paragraph above it, you can
Promote paragraph (aa) to paragraph (ii) to paragraph (a) to paragraph (1), and
Demote - paragraph (1) to paragraph (a) to paragraph (ii) to paragraph (aa)
You cannot promotions or demote, if the element
above paragraph (1) is a Heading, Lawmaker cannot demote to a paragraph (a).
is the first of it’s kind, eg: para (a), it cannot be demoted to paragraph (ii)
add any other restrictions
If the provision has lower-level (or child) elements beneath it, these will also be promoted or demoted to the next level up or down.
Add screen shots of before and after?
Promoting Last Element of it’s Type
If the provision is the last child of its parent, it will be promoted into the closing words of its parent provision
If the provision had child elements, lower-level paragraphs with numbering format (i) and/or (aa) will be moved up a level, except if they are children of a child definition or step
Promoting Closing Words:
Closing words, where the parent isn't a section or schedule paragraph, will be promoted to become siblings of their parent provision
Promoting Schedule Subparagraphs:
Schedule subparagraphs will become the content of the schedule paragraph, copying over any text.
If the schedule sub-paragraph had child elements, they will remain child elements without any changes in element type.
Promoting Paragraphs with Numbering Format (1):
Paragraphs with numbering format (1) will create a new regulation (or article etc.) with the promoted paragraph's content. The heading of the regulation (or article etc.) will be left blank.
If the paragraph had child elements, they will be copied to the newly created paragraph without changes in their element types.
Promoting Bullet Lists:
The entire bullet list and its child items will be promoted to become a bullet list at the level above.
If the selected item is at the highest level and has no child elements, it will be promoted into a paragraph of text without a bullet.
Promoting Paragraph Lists in Explanatory Notes and Preamble:
Paragraph lists and their child items will be promoted to become a paragraph list at the level above, converting the numbering format (e.g., from (aa) to (i) and (i) to (a)).
If the selected paragraph is at the highest level and has no child elements, it will be promoted into a regular paragraph of text without a number.
Note: Some promotions may not be possible based on specific conditions or if elements have child elements that prevent further promotion.
Lawmaker may not yet have the rules correctly implemented. If you believe Lawmaker should be able to Promote or Demote the element you have selected please notify the Service team via the Lawmaker Support portal (now closed)
